La'aloa Beach Park – also known as Magic Sands or White Sands beach in Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. It's called Magic Sands because when rough surf hits, all of the sand is emptied off the beach and temporarily moved out to sea. No need to worry, it all comes back eventually.

Well the first thing Sheila and I had to do was find someone that could shape a board while I was there. We ended up finding a great shaper in Haiku named Jeff Timpone, one of the best shapers around! The paintings is of the new house (that was still under some construction). Sheila's husband Jeff and I swam out to get some photos for reference. LOTS of hours went into the painting on the surfboard and I have not seen it glassed yet, but heard it looks great.

The Eva Parker Woods Cottage was built by Frank Woods and Eva, the descendants of John Palmer Parker, who founded Parker Ranch. Over half a century ago, the late Francis H. I'i Brown, a sportsman and socialite with royal Hawaiian lineage, acquired the fishponds and surrounding lands from the family of Eva Parker Woods. A man equally at home in the worlds of black tie and fast cars, Brown treasured Kalahuipua'a as a retreat from the demands of urban life: a place to fish, talk story; a place where he could reach back to the simpler lifestyle of his royal Hawaiian ancestors. He spent the most time here with his sweetheart, Winona Love, the acclaimed Hawaiian hula dancer.

These are some new small paintings from hiking in the hills of Simi Valley. Haven't been out this week because of the rains, but should be gourgeous when things dry out and green up!
This series of paintings are done with complimentary colors palettes which I have been experimenting with for a year or so. This one is done in the blue/orange palette.

Gluten free banana pancakes

Since I can not have Gluten, I make my banana pancakes with Pamela's baking and pancake mix. This is the best gluten free mix I have tried! (No need to add Xanthan gum)

It tastes great!

Just add:

bananas sliced on top or cook in pancakes
coconut syrup
whipped cream

Puako is a small area in North Kona. Quite possibly one of my favorite places on earth, next to Hanalei in Kauai. I keep going back to this place, and have painted from this area for a couple of years! You have 10 million houses next to old Hawaiian shacks, but there is just something about the place that is so cool!

The Painted Church

The historical St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church also known as The Painted Church, is located in Captain Cook Bay, on the slopes of Mauna Loa (South Kona). This building was built in 1899 but the church dates back to 1842.

Murals depicting bible stories to teach the Hawaiians who could not read, were painted by a priest named Father John Velghe. He was a self taught artist and used ordinary house paint!

The church is still used today!

Finally it is raining tonight! It has been pouring for over an hour. This is the first major rainfall in Kona since I've been here. It smells wonderful!

I am having computer issues. Looks like I blew the USB ports so I can not download any new photos. The computer store says not good, better back everything up!

Hopefully my computer will make it another week. I am comimg back to come back to California October 1st.

Hawaiian Poke

For those of you that know me well, you know I love my Poke!

My version is simple:

Sushi grade Ahi tuna (cubed, as much as you think you need)
green onions (chopped)
Wheat free soy sauce (Wheat free for me)
Chile oil (I like Oils of Aloha Pele's Fire Macadamia Nut Oil-soooo good)
Sesame seeds
salt and pepper to taste

Poke (pronounced POH-kay) is served in most Hawaiian homes and restaurants. You can even pick some up at most of the local food stores also. In California, Bristol Farms in Westlake Village makes a great version! And in Simi Valley, we have a fresh fish market called Oceanfresh Seafood Market where I get my ahi after being caught about 8 hours earlier in the day!

In Hawaiian, poke means "cut piece" or "small piece." Poke is bite-size pieces of raw fish soaked in seasonings. Poke is actually the Hawaiian version of Japanese sashimi.

For centuries, Hawaiian fishermen cut their catch of raw fish into cubes and seasoned it with whatever ingredients they had. Modern versions make use of seasonings brought by the many different cultures of the Islands, such as soy sauce, onions, tomatoes, and chilies.

Poke is considered a local food or "local grind" - comfort food to the Hawaiians. Normally local food is not the cuisine that is served in upscale hotels and restaurants of Hawaii, but poke has crossed such boundaries. It was not until the 1970s that the recipes for poke started appearing in cookbooks.

When I worked for Windjammer in Hawaii, we used to catch our ahi, sliced it, rolled up in lettuce then dipped in soy sauce mixed with a little brown sugar. So ONO!

Well it's been a quiet but exciting week. Painted at the ponds at Mauna Lani resort. They are old fishing ponds connected to the ocean that the Hawaiians raised fish in. What a beautiful spot! More paintings coming from that area.

I will be selling my work in another new gallery in Hilo and a frame shop gallery in Kailua-Kona. And I have an appointment with a very important gallery on Monday! And still there are many galleries I have not even visited yet!

The waves have calmed down a bit, so this side of the island is a little easier to snorkel in. My underwater camera wasn't working so I sent it to my camera store in Thousand Oaks and they got it to work! (the camera store here in town just said it was broken, no can fix) so it's on it's way back to me, YEA! In the mean time, my swims with the Honu (turtles) and fish will just go into my memory bank.

Back on Oahu, Len is working hard. She spent all day delivering more prints to my stores in Haleiwa. The stores are already getting ready for Christmas!

Artist Suzy Papanikolas

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet one of my favorite island artists, Suzy Papanikolas! I first saw her work years ago in Maui. Her larger than life acrylic paintings capture the pure essence of the Hawaiian Culture!

I drove out to her home just north of Hilo. We chatted about art, and then this multi talented artist showed me her home, studio, smaller buildings on her property that she built for guests along with fruits, flowers and vegetables that she grows. Suzy was raised in Laguna, California.

On her easel, she was working on another large painting of a well known canoe carver, a friend of hers. Can't wait to see the finished painting!
Suzy shows her work in The Gallery Hilton here on the Big Island and in Maui at the Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao, Village Contemporary Gallery in Lahaina and Maui Hands Gallery in Paia, Lahaina and Kanapali.

Friday morning I met with the Kohala plein air paint group and we painted at a Palm Tree Nursery on the North West side of the island. The original owner traveled the world to bring rare species back to his nursery. The University of Hawaii now comes over to do research on the many Palms.

The current owners children painted also. They are home schooled and love to paint.

My afternoon was spent walking through the shops and galleries in the towns of Havi and Hapa'au.

Back tracking a bit to last week on Oahu, a picture of myself behind one of my surfboards that is hand painted on both sides, at Kai Ku Hale in Hale'iwa.
(It is 9'2" and can actually be surfed on)

And some paintings of my other stores in Haleiwa - the orange building is Global Creations Interiors and the red building is Aoki's Shave Ice. Both are located in the historic town of Hale'iwa on the north shore of Oahu.

Flaming Mango Recipe

Ingredients:

2 fresh mangos, or 12 slices canned mango, about 1/2 inch thick
1 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup tequila

How to make Flaming Mangos

Wash and peel fresh mangos; cut each into 6 slices.
Place in chafing dish or skillet.
Pour orange juice over fruit and sprinkle with sugar.
Heat to simmering, stirring gently to dissolve sugar and coat fruit.
After 3 or 4 minutes, pour in tequila; keep over medium heat.
Flame sauce by pouring a little tequila into teaspoon and holding it over flame of chafing dish or range until it flames; then use this flaming tequila to light tequila on top of mangos.

Serve over vanilla ice cream only or add a slice of pound cake

My good friends Sheila and Jeff, who live on Maui, came over to visit with me for a few days. The town was crowded today for The Queen Lili’ukolani Canoe Race. Participants come from all over the world for this race which is named after the last reigning monarch of Hawai'i because the first race fell on her birthday. These pictures of the torch parade was part of the celebration!

Ashley Seeger, Regional Sales Manager of Old Republic Title & Escrow of Hawai'i (ortc.com) invited me to be a participant at the Honolulu Board of Realtors Windward Regional meeting. I donated one of my giclee's of "Windward Hale" as a door prize. The winner of the drawing had left early so a second person was picked. It was Kathie Wells who started a nonprofit organization for donating items to the local schools. She felt bad because the first winner was her friend and said the right thing to do would be to give it to her. The original winner was thrilled and surprised!

Friday September 4th 2009 Kohala Plein Air Painters (The Big Island)

Met up with my friend, Bob Appleman to paint. Bob is the Ambassador for the State of Hawai'i to the National Portrait Society of America. My friend, Nancy and I ( we are both members of this organization) met him at one of the conferences in Washington D.C. three or four years ago. He drove me around yesterday to show me some beaches and places to paint, and he heads up a group of plein air painters in Waimea. This is a small painting that I painted with the group today. It is the view behind a historical house called Anna Ranch up in Waimea. Weather was great!! Cooler than down here on the water in Kona. The elevation up there is about 1500 feet or so and the clouds hung on the mountain tops all day. Good fun painting...finally!

New Beginnings and The Aikaus

Friday morning was the highlight of my week! Eleni Aikau, who I met at the BNI meeting has a skincare treatment business called "NEW BEGINNINGS-a wellness garden". She was so gracious to see us early and talk story for an hour or so. She is so passionate and knowledgeable about the history of Hawai'i, it's Statehood and the Akaka Bill which as I understand will let Hawaiians gain recognition as an Indian tribe but they don't get gambling and other benefits.
She showed us her new trailer that is going to be her new treatment/wellness center.
Unfortunately for me she had a client arrive or else I could have listened to her talk all day! But her husband, Clyde took over and finished showing us the property. Eleni has bees that she loves (and honey) I got up close to take a picture of the bees and Clyde said "Brave Wahine!" Well...Eleni said the bees were nice!

Clyde's brother was Eddie Aikau, an Internationally well known Hawaiian waterman and legend in the surfing world! Eddie was the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay. He joined the crew of the Hokule'a, a double hulled canoe that was going to sail from Hawaii to Tahiti following an ancient route. (This happened just a few months before I sailed to Hawaii from California in 1978). The canoe developed a leak and Eddie paddled towards Lanai for help and was never seen again. There is a surf event called the Eddie Aikau Surf Contest which takes place at Waimea Bay some time in the winter only if the waves are 20 foot for at least a day (that translates to 40 foot waves here in Hawai'i).

Back to Eleni's husband, Clyde...he broke open some macadamia nuts for us from their tree and sat with us for a while. He showed us his son's, Ha'a Aikau's picture on the cover of Free Surf Magazine. He proudly read us the article about his son from the magazine, so sweet! Then told me he would be surfing at the Duke Fest later that day if I was around I could see him with other surf legends like Buffalo and Ben Aipa! I did see some friends of my sister, Steph, that I had met in California: Surf Champions Jocko Sutherland and Jericho Poppler (I heard Jocko say he taught Jerry Lopez how to surf Pipeline!) Jocko's girlfriend is an Artist also.

Clyde was involved in the first annual Surf and Music Festival this year so I hope to be involved next year with possibly donating one of my hand painted surfboards!
